A man is fighting for his life in hospital after a stabbing in east London this afternoon, police say.

Emergency services were called to reports of a stabbing in Highbridge Road, Barking, at 3.37pm today.

London’s Air Ambulance landed in the grounds of nearby Barking Abbey and a man, believed to be aged around 25, was found with stab wounds.

He was taken to an east London hospital in a critical condition, police said.

David Edwards, who was staying at the nearby Ibis hotel, said the stabbing appeared to have happened following a heated argument in the grounds of the Metallic used car shop on Highbridge Road.

The 58-year-old said: "I thought 'what's going on?' At one time there were about nine police cars and ambulances. There must have been 20 to 25 police officers at the end of the day.

"Eventually they loaded the victim into the ambulance. He wasn't moving."

The Met Police are investigating but there have been no arrests so far.
