A 27-year-old man has been stabbed to death in a rush hour attack in Essex.

Police said he was knifed during an "altercation" on the residential Baddow Road, at the junction with Longfields Road, shortly before 7pm as commuters made their way home from work.

A short time later, a group of men accompanying the victim flagged down paramedics on Broomfield Road - about two miles away on the other side of the city.

Police said it was not clear at this stage how they had moved there from the scene of the stabbing. It is en route to Broomfield Hospital, where the man was later taken and died from his injuries.

DI Danny Stoten, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, is leading the murder investigation.

"This happened in a residential area in the early evening during rush hour, so it would have been busy," he said.

"I am appealing for witnesses or anyone with information who has yet to speak to police to come forward.”

Baddow Road was closed between the junctions with the B1009 Beehive Lane and Tabors Avenue until 3am this morning while forensic examinations were carried out, police said.

Witnesses are asked to contact officers on 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
