A former City of London Police officer has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm after Tasering a suspect near Liverpool Street Station.
Kevin Coady, 47, is accused of using “excessive force” in a bid to catch Ryan McCabe in Broadgate Circle on August 1, 2020.
It is said Mr McCabe had run away from police when Coady, then a police constable with City of London Police, deployed his Taser - allegedly without warning.
The alleged victim suffered injuries in the incident, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said.
Coady, who has now left the force, appeared at Westminster magistrates court on Friday morning, charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm.
He indicated a not guilty plea and District Judge John Zani sent the case to Southwark crown court, where the ex-PC will next appear on January 3.
Coady was granted unconditional bail.
Announcing the charge, the IOPC said Coady, who lives in Minehead in Somerset, was based at Bishopsgate station at the time of the incident.
“It is alleged Coady used excessive force when he deployed his Taser after a man had run off from police in Broadgate Circle on 1 August 2020”, it said in a statement.
“Our investigation began following a mandatory referral from the force, in August 2020, and a complaint about the officer’s use of force.
“In October 2021 we concluded our investigation and sent our final report and a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service, which authorised the charge contrary to section 20 of the Offences against the Person Act 1861.”
