A man has died in hospital after he was hit by a car on a busy road bridge in south east London.

The pedestrian, aged 54, was hit by a grey VW Golf on the Creek Road bridge in Deptford, at around 5.20pm yesterday.

Police say the man suffered serious injuries and died a short while later, after being rushed to hospital by paramedics.

The driver of the car, aged 31, stopped at the scene and was arrested by police.

He is currently being questioned by detectives at a south London police station on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Following the crash, the bridge was cordoned off while officers from the Met's Roads and Transport Policing Command carried out their investigations.

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
