An elderly woman is in a serious condition in hospital after she was knocked down by a man fleeing a theft at a department store in south London.

One man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm after the 83-year-old woman was hit at Elys department store in Wimbledon.

Paramedics treated the pensioner at the scene for a head injury.

She remains in hospital and is in a serious but stable condition, Scotland Yard said today.

Security staff saw two men shoplifting inside the store at about 2.10pm yesterday afternoon (August 20) and called police.

One man was detained at the scene, but another knocked the woman down as he escaped.

A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service said: “We sent an ambulance crew to the scene. We treated a woman for a head injury, she was taken as a priority to St George’s Hospital.”

Police are investigating.

A 36-year-old was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. He remains in custody at a south London police station.

Robert Paul, 40, of Waldemar Road, Wimbledon, has been charged with theft from a shop. He has been bailed to appear at Wimbledon Magistrates’ court on September 3.
