A four-year-old girl was taken to hospital after she was bitten in the face by a dog, police said.

The victim was set upon by a "Staffy-type" as she waited outside a shop with her sister in Brighton on Thursday evening.

Sussex Police said the girl suffered a puncture wound to her upper lip after the incident in Findon Road, Whitehawk, at around 6.30pm. She was treated at the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital.

Police said the dog was off the lead with two similar dogs - two were black and one was white.

They were with a man described as being in his 50s, with bright purple hair and a brown moustache.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
