A man is fighting for life in hospital after he collapsed while chasing a bike thief up an east London street, police believe.

The victim, aged in his early 40s, was found lying in Wick Lane, Hackney Wick, at around 7.30am this morning.

Police, who were called to the road by paramedics, believe he may have been running after a suspected thief before he keeled over.

He was taken to an east London hospital where he remains in a critical condition. It is not yet known what caused him to collapse.

One resident of Wick Lane said he had seen a “huge police presence” on the street this morning, including forensics officers.

He said: "There were about six cars, one fire engine first thing. A neighbour saw a man being given chest compressions.

"They were looking for fingerprints in the entrance to a building's garage."

Officers from Tower Hamlets are investigating what happened but have made no arrests so far.
