A man has been jailed for killing a cyclist in a hit-and-run crash in south London.

Samer Nayeb, 23, from Clapham, was sentenced on Thursday to three years and four months for causing the death of 26-year-old Leon Richards and a string of other related offences.

Following the crash on April 4, 2014, Nayed evaded police for five months before being arrested and charged, Scotland Yard said.

He had been driving a black BMW when he collided with the rider on Clapham Manor Street in Clapham.

Mr Richards died in hospital a day later. A post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as head injuries.

After his death, his mother Joanne McCarthy, 44, said: “He was a loveable rogue, but not in a bad sense.

"I don’t think he had enemies. He was knocked over on my birthday. He sent me a card online 45 minutes before it happened. We are all struggling to come to terms with it.”

Nayeb pleaded guilty at Croydon Crown Court on March 31 to causing death by careless driving, three counts of perverting the course of justice, fraudulently obtaining insurance and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

He was sentenced at the same court today and also disqualified from driving for four years.
