The killer of London student Meredith Kercher has claimed he wrote in her blood on a wall in an attempt to “understand” what she was trying to say.

Protesting his innocence, Rudy Guede, who is serving a 16-year sentence for the murder of the 21-year-old student, claimed he had found her bleeding and had fought to save her life.

Ms Kercher, from Coulsdon, was found dead in the apartment she shared with American Amanda Knox in Perugia, Italy in 2007.

Knox and her then boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito served four years in prison and were put on trial five times for the murder but were finally cleared of any involvement in March.

In an Italian TV interview from his prison, Guede, 30, claimed that he was in a bathroom at the apartment but suddenly heard a “heart-rending cry” and ran to the student’s aid.

He said: “At that moment I see Meredith on the ground and an abundance of blood. I go to the bathroom and take a towel and try to staunch the wound in the neck.

“I take another and then another... It was heartbreaking that moment, you try to do the best...

“She was trying to tell me something. I wrote in blood on the wall to even understand… fear overwhelmed me.”

Guede, originally from Ivory Coast, added: “I cannot get another day in prison for killing Meredith... Justice for Meredith has not been done.”

After Sollecito and Knox were released from prison in 2011, Knox immediately left the country and returned to the US, where she finished her degree in Creative Writing and published a $4 million (£2.8 million) memoir.
