The mother of three children found dead in a house in south London has been charged with their murders.

Mrs Tania Clarence, 42, is accused of killing her three children - two twin boys aged three and a four-year-old girl - all of whom were severely disabled.

They were found dead at the family's £1.2 million home in New Malden on Tuesday.

Twins Max and Ben and four-year-old Olivia suffered from a degenerative genetic condition called spinal muscular dystrophy which meant they were not expected to live beyond early childhood.

They were believed to have been smothered to death after they were found in the pyjamas in bed.

Their father, banker Gary Clarence, 43, was at the time on holiday in his home country of South Africa with the couple's eldest child, who is eight and is not affected by the condition.

The motor neurone illness which the children suffered from makes muscles waste away, leaving those affected unable to function properly and often causing them to die as a result of breathing problems.

The wheelchair-bound children needed feeding tubes, among other daily interventions, friends said. The parents employed a carer and a domestic housekeeper, but did not have 24-hour carers.

Police said post-mortem investigations into the deaths are ongoing.

Mrs Clarence will appear at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court on Friday charged with the children's murders.
