A stranger rapist dubbed an “opportunistic monster” who attacked two women in night-time attacks in Greenwich as they walked alone is facing years in prison.

Alan Green, 39, pursued the first victim, a woman in her 50s, as she walked across Blackheath Common at 4.30am, pushing her to the ground and trying to rape her.

He tried to steal the woman’s bag in the struggle on March 9 before fleeing the scene on his bicycle, leaving behind the “terrified and traumatised” woman to raise the alarm.

Green struck again at 2am on June 2, preying on a woman in her 20s as she chatted to a friend on the phone while walking along a footbridge.

Similarly to the first attack, Green was pushing a bicycle in the moments before grabbing hold of the woman, who he then pulled into a bush and raped repeatedly.

Green, from Greenwich, was linked to the attacks by CCTV and arrested on June 19.

He denied the attacks but was found guilty at Woolwich crown court following a trial of three charges of rape, three counts of sexual assault by penetration, and a charge of attempted rape.

He was remanded in custody on Tuesday until sentencing in January.

Detective Constable Andrew Sumpter, the investigating officer, said: “These two women were going about their daily lives when they were subjected to the most horrendous ordeals, in which they feared for their lives.

“Green is an opportunistic monster, as well as a total coward who denied his actions and so made the victims have to re-live what happened to them through the court process.

“Their bravery throughout has been nothing short of astonishing, and I am truly grateful for them for supporting our investigation, which has resulted in this conviction.

"I hope in time that this will help bring this horrible matter to a close for them.”

He added: “I hope Green will now spend a very long time in prison.”
