Police are hunting as man who allegedly sexually assaulted a young woman on a late night train from central London.

The woman, aged in her 20s, was attacked by a man who sat next to her and made sexual comments before touching her inappropriately, police said.

Officers said he grabbed her hand and prevented her from leaving the train but she was able to escape when it stopped at Erith, south-east London.

Police believe the suspect left the train at the same stop and that a member of the public had tried to intervene when he saw his behaviour.

British Transport Police released a CCTV image of a man they want to speak to in connection with the assault on board the 10.57pm Southeastern service from Cannon Street to Erith on Wednesday, December 7.

Investigating officer PC Greg Fulton, said: “Unwanted sexual or intimidating behaviour such as this is inexcusable and we are working hard to trace the person responsible.

“During the journey, a member of the public became aware of this man’s behaviour and stepped in to assist. Were you this man? Please get in touch as you could also help us investigate.

“As part of our investigation, we would be very keen to speak with the man in the CCTV image. I think he has vital information that could help us, if you know him, contact us as soon as possible.”
