A prisoner has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a fellow inmate at a prison in south London.

The man, aged in his 40s, was today being questioned in police custody over the death of a second prisoner, aged in his 60s, at Wandsworth Prison.

The victim, whose name has not yet been released by police, was found dead in his cell this morning just after 7.30am, a spokesman for Scotland Yard said.

His next of kin have been informed and a post-mortem examination will be scheduled in due course, he added.

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police's Homicide and Major Crime Command are investigating.

HMP Wandsworth is the largest prison in the UK, holding up to 1877 prisoners. It is home to category B male prisoners who are subjected to the second highest possible security restrictions while behind bars.

A Prison Service spokeswoman said: "An HMP Wandsworth prisoner was pronounced dead in hospital at 8:52 am on Monday 4 May.

"A police investigation is ongoing, so it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”
