A doctor who was caught with a “chilling” stash of child abuse images and extreme pornography as he entered the UK looking for a job in the NHS has been jailed for four months.
Ioan Boila, 55, told border officials he was on his way to an interview for a job as an NHS locum doctor when illegal DVDs and VHS videos were found in the back of his car.
When the Romanian-born medic’s phone, computer, and password-protected hard drive were analysed, National Crime Agency officers found more than 7,000 pornographic videos of sex with animals and graphic mutilation.
They also uncovered eight videos featuring sexual abuse of children.
Boila, who was freed on bail after his arrest in January 2013, went on the run for more than three years instead of facing the charges.
He returned to Romania and continued working as a doctor until his capture under a European Arrest Warrant in November last year.
Boila pleaded guilty in January at Canterbury crown court to possessing and importing indecent and obscene images, and was jailed yesterday for four months.
Richard Bowen, from the NCA, said following the sentencing hearing: “Ioan Boila was in possession of some truly horrific material, including films involving child abuse and the mutilation of animals.
“The fact that he wanted to come to the UK to practice as a doctor makes it even more chilling.”
Boila will now be on the sex offenders register for seven years.
