Victims of John Worboys, the “black cab rapist”, today lost their damages claim against his motor insurer.

The 10 women said that Inceptum Insurance Company, formerly known as HSBC Insurance (UK), should pay damages for their injuries because his crimes were committed in his insured London taxi.

Rejecting their claim, Mr Justice Silber, sitting in the High Court, ordered the women to pay legal costs of £150,000. However, they will not have to foot the bill after Pannone, the law firm representing them, revealed that they were insured. The judge said he was sympathetic to the women, but had to “follow the appropriate legal principles”.

Worboys, 54, was jailed indefinitely in 2009 after being convicted at Croydon crown court of drugging and sexually assaulting women while working as a licensed taxi driver.
