A man has been taken to hospital after allegedly being attacked with a "corrosive substance" in north-east London.

Police were called to Walthamstow high street after reports that a man had been assaulted at around 6.30am.

They said the suspects fled in a waiting car after the incident.

The man was taken to an east London hospital for treatment. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, police said.

A Met spokesman added: "It is alleged that the victim had been approached by two suspects, both wearing burkhas, and had the substance thrown at him before they fled in a waiting car."

London Ambulance Service said they were called at 6.33am and sent an ambulance crew and incident response officer to the scene.

Unconfirmed reports on social media suggest the liquid was thrown at a market stall holder setting up in the high street.

Another market trader from Walthamstow told the Standard the victim was hit in the face and it affected his eye.

Pictures from the scene showed a cordon in place near the junction of Palmerston Road while police investigated.

No arrests have been made and enquiries continue, police said.
