Students 'need to be employable'

10 April 2012

University students should spend more time doing work experience during their degree courses and study skills to make them more employable, a major review said today.

The government-commissioned report, by Professor Tim Wilson, said many businesses were concerned about the lack of skills graduates have when they start work.

It called for every full-time undergraduate to be given the chance of an internship during their course, and an increase in the number of "sandwich" courses allowing students to take time out to spend up to 12 months in a job.

Students on unpaid internships should be given money from the Office for Fair Access, which encourages students from poorer backgrounds to go to university, the report said.

It comes after figures published last week showed almost a quarter of university leavers were unemployed last year.
