A rainbow over St Pancras: vivid new sculpture unveiled at transport hub

7 April 2014

The skies might be grey but a rainbow of colour was cast across St Pancras station today when a new sculpture was unveiled high above the platforms.

Chromolocomotion by the Scottish artist David Batchelor is a giant 20 metres by 10 metre mosaic work of 44 brightly-coloured Perspex L shapes slotted together beneath the Grade I listed shed roof at the international transport hub.

The work is the second in a series of commissions by HS1 Ltd, the owners of St Pancras International, called Terrace Wires. It follows Lucy and Jorge Orta's Cloud: Meteoros which was seen last year.

Batchelor, 58, said: "Terrace Wires offered me the chance to create a piece of work that celebrates the beauty and grandeur of this iconic example of industrial engineering. It seemed appropriate to celebrate this great volume of space above the platforms with something that alludes to these magnificent qualities."

Nicola Shaw, chief executive of HS1, said more than one million people a week saw the Terrace Wires commission.

"We are in no doubt that this latest piece will delight and intrigue passengers, stopping them in their tracks and encouraging them to look up, capturing both their eyes and their hearts."

Chromolocomotion can be viewed from the Grand Terrace until late September this year.
