Award-winning sourdough bakery faces health inspection fine over ‘rat in kitchens’

Mouldy walls inside the kitchens of award-winning bakery Slow Bread Company

An artisan bakery supplying sourdough bread to cafes and restaurants faces a hefty fine after health inspectors uncovered a rat infestation.

The Slow Bread Company’s kitchens under railway arches in Stamford Brook were inspected by Hammersmith and Fulham council in February last year.

There was a dead rat next to an area for ingredients, bags of flour stacked against a mouldy wall, and droppings behind an oven, Westminster magistrates heard.

Conditions were not much better in January. The bakery, set up by Nick May and his wife in 2013, has won prizes at the World Bread Awards.

Mr May pleaded guilty to three food hygiene charges and admitted identical charges against the company. Sentencing was adjourned.
