Springwatch star Bill Oddie plans to chop down trees over damage to Hampstead home

Bill Oddie: The conservationist wants to chop down the trees outside his north London home

Springwatch presenter and nature-lover Bill Oddie is planning to chop down trees outside his north London home because they are causing damage to the building.

The conservationist - a well-known champion of all things green - has an array of tall trees thriving in his front garden in Hampstead.

But Mr Oddie has put a request into Camden Council to have the trees cut down after they started causing damage to his property.

The 19th Century townhouse has begun to show long cracks in the ceiling and walls caused by subsidence, he said.

It is believed these are related to the tall Ash, Sycamore and Viburnum trees – one thought to be up to six metres tall – growing at the front of his property.

Mr Oddie said he felt he had no choice but to cut the trees down.

He told the Camden New Journal: “There’s been some cracks in the house and we went through the process.

“Mr tree man came around. I don’t regard myself as having a choice in it if it is deemed to be causing subsidence.”

“I’d prefer to live in a tree, really," he told the paper.

"It pains me every year when they cut the trees back, but at the same time as I get older I am getting more and more reasonable.

“People make such a fuss about cutting one down – they say there’s the ozone layer getting thinner, but let’s deal with things that are clear and are genuinely affecting every park and nature reserve.”
