Pro and amateur runners alike turned out to pound the capital's streets in the annual Bupa London 10,000 race today.

Thousands of athletes, many of them raising money for charity, completed a course beginning and ending in St James's Park, via the Square Mile.

It hosted the British 10k championships, which saw Andy Vernon retain his title with a new personal best of 28.38, while Jo Pavey took the women's title in 32.56 - despite a night of vomiting and fever.

Athletes had been warned of a particularly high risk of hay fever thanks to a soaring pollen count from the plane trees in Green Park.

The Bupa 10,000 was first held in 2008. Mo Farah set a British record of 27.44 there in 2010.
