A man died early today following a police raid on the address of a burglary suspect in south London.

The man in his 40s is thought to have suffered critical injuries after falling from an open third floor window at the house in Hercules Road, Lambeth.

Scotland Yard said officers had gone to the address to arrest a man for suspected burglary at around 10pm last night.

The man refused to let police into the property and officers called for back-up and forced their way inside.

When they searched the premises they found the man lying on the ground below an open third floor window.

The officers immediately administered first aid and called the London Ambulance Service.

The man was taken to a south London hospital suffering from serious injuries but died early today at 1:26 am.

The man’s family have been told.

A post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

The Met's Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Police Complaints Commission attended the scene.

The Met said the matter had been referred to the IPCC.
