A man has died after plunging to the ground in a shopping centre in Canary Wharf.

Police and paramedics were called at about 8.45am today after the man, believed to be in his fifties, fell. He was treated but could not be saved.

A witness said: “I was walking down the escalator and just heard a collective gasp, then an almighty thud.

“People stood around looking shocked then formed a group around him.

“Within seconds security and Wharf staff were running to the scene.

“It’s very sad, I’m sure there are a lot of shaken-up people this morning.”

One onlooker said: “There was a body lying there on the floor. He’d fallen straight past me… I had to look away.”

Canary Wharf resident Justin Fynes, 36, was walking past the ground floor level of Cabot Place by designer store Paul Smith as the man fell. He said: “The body appeared to be of a man, dressed professionally like a City worker. There was a bag and phone nearby.”

A police spokeswoman said: “Police were called at 8.44am by the London Ambulance Service to reports of a man who had fallen from height in Canada Square. Officers, the London Ambulance Service and Air Ambulance attended. The man was pronounced dead at the scene at 9.05am.”

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “Sadly, despite the efforts of our medics, a person died at the scene.” A number of onlookers were also reportedly being treated for shock following the incident. Part of the shopping centre remained closed today.

It comes just a day after a person died at Canary Wharf station after apparently falling from escalators. Police were not treating the incident as suspicious.
