Diners were forced to flee a branch of McDonald’s in south east London when a fire broke out inside.

Firefighters were called to the branch in Lewisham High Street at 10.39am this morning.

The dining area was evacuated as fire crews tackled a blaze in the kitchen.

Nearby buses were also emptied of passengers and pedestrians were told to steer clear of the shopping area on the high street.

It was under control by 11.15am.

A spokeswoman for the LFB said it did not cause extensive damage and there were no injuries.

The restaurant has since reopened. LFB crews are investigating the cause.

An onlooker wrote online: "Lewisham is always on a madness."
