A City solicitor was left with life-changing injuries when he was knocked down by a cyclist racing through a red light, a court heard today.
Clive Hyer, a partner at Rosenblatt’s, was hit by Andrej Schipka, 44, at 26mph as he stepped onto a pedestrian crossing.
Mr Hyer, who represented nuclear test veterans in a case against the Ministry of Defence, suffered a fractured skull and a brain haemorrhage. He has no memory of the collision.
Schipka, from Hampstead, went over the handlebars but was not injured. He denies careless cycling.
City of London magistrates were shown CCTV footage of the collision in Holborn Viaduct in July last year.
Varinder Hayre, prosecuting, said: “Mr Hyer was crossing from the north to the south side. When he was in the centre of the carriageway he was struck and seriously injured by the cyclist Mr Schipka.”
Pc Philip Cook told the court how he found Mr Hyer dazed on the road. Schipka told him: “When I came close to the crossover a couple of people ran over and [Mr Hyer] started moving out. I shouted and braked but it was too late. I collided with him and fell over the bars of my bike.”
Miss Hayre said: “We say [Schipka] was cycling without due care and attention when approaching a pedestrian crossing, by making no attempt to slow down, by failing to anticipate any pedestrian could step out [and] by failing to keep a proper lookout.”
