'Dangerous' Highbury road layout scrapped after car flips over

An “incredibly dangerous” £130,000 road design in north London will be scrapped after a string of accidents.

The width restriction layout at Drayton Park in Highbury is being replaced after the latest crash saw a tourist’s car flip over.

Allison Webber, from San Francisco, was hurt as she went through it on Friday. This prompted Islington Council to promise to remove the traffic calming measure over safety fears.

Ms Webber said: “I was going really slowly. But it’s incredibly narrow and as I tried to drive through my wheel caught one of the bollards and lifted me up. The other bollard cracked my windscreen — if I hadn’t been wearing my seatbelt it would have hit my head. As it is I’ve cut my arms and I’m a bit shaken up. This is an incredibly dangerous bit of road.”

Since the layout was installed last May at least three cars have flipped over on it, with locals saying there were minor accidents every other day. In September it was rebuilt and another modification was made in April this year, costing a total of almost £130,000.

Catherine West, leader of Islington council, admitted it had made a mistake and said the design would be removed. The width restriction was also branded the worst ever for motorists’ fines in Islington after the council made £1 million in penalty charge notices.
