David Cameron's Cabinet reshuffle 'made young more likely to vote' - poll suggests

Reshuffle: Nicky Morgan was made Education Secretary

David Cameron's Cabinet reshuffle has boosted young people’s interest in politics and made it more likely they will vote, a poll suggests today.

The survey, carried out immediately after the reshuffle, pointed to an increase in young people intending to vote in 2015, with 43 per cent approving of Nicky Morgan’s promotion to Education Secretary.

The study was carried out by OnePoll and commissioned by vInspired, a charity running a campaign to increase turn-out among the young.

Moira Swinbank, chief executive of vInspired, said: “These signs of an increase in intention to vote show that there is an appetite among young people to see a more modern and representative Parliament. Young people make up 14 per cent of the electorate.

"They want to play an active part in our society and politicians need to do more to make political processes more open to them.”

Mr Cameron’s shake-up promoted two women to the Cabinet, as well as other women to more junior roles.

OnePoll spoke to 500 people aged between 16 and 25 and found that 27 per cent would be minded to vote in 2015, compared with just 12 per cent in a survey last year. A further 19 per cent said they were more interested in voting because of the reshuffle.

The research also showed that 29 per cent of young people wanted more ordinary people in the Cabinet, while 17 per cent of young women said they would be more likely to vote if there were more women in Parliament.
