Residents in Camden have been left terrified after posters appeared saying one of the world's deadliest animals had gone missing in the area.

The signs on lampposts and trees warn that a pet snake called Rosie has been missing from her owner’s home since January 5.

The posters ask people living nearby to check their homes for the fugitive serpent, which likes to seek out warm hiding places, such as behind washing machines or under car seats.

Although some are treating the posters as a practical joke, as the phone number listed on the poster has been left unanswered to calls, others are fearing for their lives.

The poster warns anyone who sees the reptile not to approach it, as it is highly venomous.

The snakes can grow up to four metres long, and just a drop of their venom is enough to kill.

The RSPCA is investigating claims of the snake's disappearance.

Scientific officer for exotics Alexandra Jones said: “Black mamba venom is deadly, as they are related to cobras.

"For this reason, mambas are considered a ‘dangerous wild animal’ and so require a licence to be kept.

"Part of the licensing process is ensuring the animal cannot escape.”
