The driver of a £250,000 Rolls-Royce involved in a crash that killed a 66-year-old pedestrian near Buckingham Palace is said to be “devastated” by the accident.

Millionaire Qatari businessman Hassan bin Ali bin Hassan al-Thani was driving the purple Rolls-Royce Wraith when it accidentally hit the man close to Hyde Park in the early hours of last Thursday.

Mr al-Thani was stopped at the scene and was later breathalysed by police and found to be below the drink-drive limit.

He told MailOnline he was “physically OK” but declined to comment on the matter further.

However, a friend told the news website: “He’s devastated. He suddenly saw the man and had no chance to react.”

Police are investigating but the driver is not thought to have been speeding or suspected of any other driving offence.
