Electric car chargers to be installed on every Hackney street by 2022

28 November 2019

Plans to install electric car chargers in every street in Hackney by 2022 have been revealed.

The council is set to conduct a feasibility study into proposals that could see 2,000 charging points put on residential streets.

It follows a previous pledge by Hackney mayor Philip Glanville for 80 per cent of residents to be within half a kilometre of a charging point.

But those plans were today called “not fit for purpose” by the council’s cabinet member for transport Jon Burke.

He said: “Cars are driven for convenience, not to drive half a kilometre to charge it for a few hours and then come back.”

Existing lampposts in the borough could be converted to charging points rather than installing standalone electrical points.
