Homeowners struggle to take out bins after year-long rat invasion

Homeowners have been facing a battle to take out the bins for almost a year after their street became infested with rats.

Footage shows a pack of vermin scurrying around outside garages just yards from £1.4 million townhouses on Barrington Road, Crouch End.

The garages, which are run by council housing management organisation Homes for Haringey, are normally used to store bins for nearby Ramsey Court but they have been moved onto the street to try to tackle the infestation.

But this week pest control was finally called in after BBC producer Harriet Jaine uploaded a video to a local Facebook group.

Ms Jaine, 45, who lives opposite the garages, decided to film the rats after trying to contact Haringey council and rubbish collection company Veolia.

She told the Standard: “When me and my kids saw that outside we were like, ‘Oh my god’.

“If you look out of my front window at any time you will see a rat. All the council have done really is to remove the bins from the garage and move the problem out onto the streets.”

Ms Jaine, who produces the Radio 4 comedy show My Teenage Diary, said residents in Ramsey Court had been complaining to the council and Veolia for almost a year but there had been no change.

She said: “I could be calling the council every day for two weeks and they wouldn’t take notice … I knew that if I put it on Facebook someone would see it.”

Residents have also shared concerns that their pets may be eating dead rats.

A council spokesman said: “We were made aware of an issue in Barrington Road on Monday ... Our pest control officers visited the site, identified the problem and noted there was evidence of a live infestation of rats. We have baited the area and will revisit again later this week and continue to bait as required.

“These are Homes for Haringey garages and they are arranging for them to be cleared where necessary with the garage licensees.”

Veolia said: “We can confirm that weekly refuse collections at the rear of Ramsey Court on Barrington Road are taking place on schedule.

“On Monday we were made aware of a separate issue of waste being fly-tipped in garages on the premises.

“This is likely to be responsible for the pest infestation and the managing agent has confirmed the problem is being addressed.”
