In pictures: Stunning black and white images show bygone era with kids playing in London's streets

1/15

These stunning black and white pictures show the history of young children playing sports on the streets of London.

Without the technology of today, these images dating back to the 1920s show young friends entertaining themselves with a simple pair of dice or a ball and piece of chalk to mark out a set of goalposts.

One of the earliest pictures, taken in December 1920 in Shadwell, shows two boys boxing barefoot in the street watched by a crowd of their friends.

Another remarkable image, snapped in 1935, pictures a fearless toddler in a toy car crossing the path of a bus in Victoria.

One image taken in Bethnal Green captures a common tradition amongst children during the 60s when they would perform the twist to protest against cars parked in their play street.

In 1930, another group of children playing cricket were caught on camera in an unknown London street with the wicket drawn onto a lamppost.

Two children were photographed in 1978 swinging from rubber tyres in the makeshift playground of the battered wives’ squat in Hartley Street, east London.
