An elderly man has died after a fire erupted at a house in north London.

The man, who was in his 80s, was found unresponsive by firefighters on the first floor of the burning house in Ripplevale Road, Islington, in the early hours of Sunday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fire crews were called shortly after midnight and had the blaze under control by about 1.50am.

A Met Police spokesman said investigators were trying to find out the cause of the fire and that the man’s relatives had been informed of his death.

“There has been no arrest and enquiries continue,” he added.
