Fairground Attraction star Eddi Reader performed songs inspired by Robert Burns at the opening of the Hampstead and Highgate Literary Festival last night.

The three-time Brit Award winner was joined by singer-songwriters Kathryn Williams and Polly Paulusma for an evening of words and music.

Acclaimed authors including Simon Garfield, Iain Sinclair and Elif Shafak are among the leading names in literature giving talks during a four-day programme of events at JW3 in Finchley Road.

The weekend will see Jay Rayner, celebrity food critic and Masterchef judge appearing on Sunday, and a whole host of bestselling authors like Diana Athill, Marina Lewycka, Gillian Slovo, Simon Garfield, and Iain Sinclair.

The event also includes poetry and fiction workshops for aspiring writers.
