London has kept the title of being the number one spot in the UK for burglary claims for the fourth year running.

Fourteen of the country’s top 20 postcodes for break-in claims were in London, an increase from last year, according to a survey by MoneySuperMarket.

The top spot for burglary was the RM8 postcode which includes Dagenham, Becontree and Becontree Heath.

Second in the burglary claims list was the IG2 postcode in Ilford which includes Gants Hill, Newbury Park and Alborough Hatch.

Woodford and South Woodford (E18) and Hornchurch, Emerson Park and Ardleigh Green (RM11) were fifth and sixth while the south-west suburbs of Teddington and Bushy Park (TW11) were also among the highest claim areas.

The results of the survey of 2.68 million home insurance quotes over 12 months came after statistics showed the number of burglaries in London fell last year.

Residential burglaries in the capital fell by 12 per cent - from 57,928 to 50,951 figures - in the 12 months to September 2014, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Police say the burglary rates in London are now the lowest since the 1970s.

Officers say they are targeting resources on each borough’s most prolific burglars as well as using predictive crime mapping techniques and traceable water to tackle break-ins.

Kevin Pratt, home insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket, said: “Our annual burglary claims tracker reveals the nation’s burglary claim hotspots, and once again London and Greater London postcodes dominate.

“The research reveals Dagenham is the UK’s top burglary hotspot, with a rate of 55 out of every 1,000 insurance quotes having made a claim in the past two years.

“Burglars often target urban areas where there’s more hustle and bustle and so less risk of being caught, but not surprisingly they also follow the money, which is why affluent areas such as Teddington appear in the top 20 claims hotspots.”
