A packed plane from London to Dublin was forced to make an emergency landing at Stansted after developing an engine problem.

CityJet flight WX123 left London City Airport at 5.30pm yesterday but was diverted to Stansted after the problem was discovered.

One person told website Independent.ie: "There was a loud bang and the wings started shaking.”

A spokesman for the Irish airline said passengers were taken off the plane while a replacement aircraft was readied.

They were flown from Stansted to Dublin later that evening.

One passenger tweeted: "Bravo @cityjet. Left lcy (late) at 17:40 bound for Dublin and landed at 18:10! In stansted.

"Nice touch to have the fire engines welcome us."
