Londoners basked in sunshine today as temperatures rose across the capital on a warmer than average Easter Monday.

People flocked to the city's parks and green spaces to make the most of the good weather.

Sunbathers laid out in St James's Park as temperatures reached 16C.

Across the rest of the country, temperatures reached a balmy 21C - well above the average for this time of year.

Parts of the south west basked in spring sunshine, with the mercury rising as much as 10C higher than what is normally forecast for April.

Temperatures in London are forecast to drop again on Tuesday and Wednesday, with highs of about 14C predicted, but could rise again towards the end of the week.

Sunshine is forecast for Thursday and Friday and the Met Office predicts it could be as hot as 18C by the weekend.

Across England, the good weather also looks set to continue for the rest of the week as high pressure ensures conditions in most areas remain settled.

Met Office Office Meteorologist Alex Burkill said Exeter, Bristol and south Wales would enjoy the best of the warmer weather.

He said: "We are going to hold on to that high pressure which is going to keep things settled. We should see plenty more decent spells of sunshine."

The average UK temperature for April is 11.4C (52F) and for England is 12.4C, according to the Met Office.

Many holidaymakers are expected to return from their long weekend breaks today, with about 16 million cars estimated to have been on the roads over the bank holiday break.

A large programme of engineering works was also scheduled to take place on the railways between Good Friday and today.
