London is set to be hit by an arctic blast this week as temperatures plummet below zero.

Temperatures could reach 8C on Monday before plummeting to -6C overnight across the south-east.

A widespread frost is forecast for both Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

UK weather: Sunny days and chilly nights to mark start of winter

Forecasters said it would remain dry and sunny despite the freezing conditions. Cloudier conditions, slightly warmer temperatures and fewer overnight frosts are expected on Thursday and Friday.

It comes after Londoners enjoyed a relatively warm weekend with temperatures of about 10C.

Luke Mial, forecaster for the Met Office, said that temperatures Monday was expected to be the coldest night of the week with temperatures dropping to -5C or -6C in rural areas and -1C to -3C in towns and cities.

He said that the week would start with two days of cold weather and added: "Monday won't feel particularly warm with temperatures struggling to hit single figures and clear skies will mean quite a cold night and possibly the coldest of the autumn so far in England and Wales.

"Tuesday will continue to feel cold so it's time to start wrapping up as we approach meteorological winter which starts on Thursday".
