Londoners are set to wake up to ice and freezing fog on Tuesday as temperatures drop to zero overnight, weather experts have warned.

A yellow weather warning has been issued in London and the south east as “hazardous” conditions hit workers on their first day back after the festive break.

Forecasters warned the capital will be gripped by a “very cold night” on Monday with the chance of lots of frost forming by Tuesday morning.

Pavements and minor roads are likely to be slippery while patches of freezing fog could also hit.

Other parts of the UK are likely to face sub-zero temperatures overnight with lows of -4C and -6C in central and southern England.

The rest of the day on Tuesday is likely to be dry and cloudy, a spokeswoman for the Met Office said.

In its yellow warning – the third most severe – the Met Office said: "Please be aware that untreated surfaces, such as pavements and some minor roads, are likely to turn very slippery later Monday night and on Tuesday morning. A few freezing fog patches are also possible.

"A very cold night is in store and as moister air comes in contact with cold surfaces later, the potential is for a lot of frost to form, rendering some surfaces hazardous."

The warning is in place until 10am on Tuesday.
