London's population 'to rise by one million in next 10 years'

Michael Clarke25 February 2016

London's population will rise by one million in the next decade, it has been claimed.

Sustainability charity, Population Matters, warned transport, housing and health services could face crippling pressure as a result of the rise.

London is already home to over 8.5 million people - and that figure is growing rapidly.

Simon Ross, Chief Executive of Population Matters said: “Our vision is of a sustainable future with decent living standards, a healthy environment and a stable population size.”

The campaign aims to promote “sustainable family size and mindful consumption” in order to reduce the impact on the planet.

The world’s population currently stands at over 7 billion people and increases by over 10,000 people every hour.

The charity believes if the increasing global population follows the current trend there could be 10 billion people by 2050.
