A 58-year-old man has died after a fire broke out at a house in south London.

Firefighters said the man was found in a bedroom and died at the scene after they were called to a blaze at an address in Derinton Road, Tooting at 4.42am today.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) said a woman, believed to be in her 50s, had left the property before crews arrived.

She was taken by paramedics to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

A LFB spokesperson said: “The fire damaged the first floor of the end of terraced property.

“Sadly crews wearing breathing apparatus found a man in a first floor bedroom and he was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The fire was brought under control at 5.35pm.

The brigade said the cause of the fire was under investigation.

Police were also called to the scene and said the fire is being treated as "unexplained" although early indications suggest it is non-suspicious.

The man has yet to be formally identified but his next of kin have been informed.

Scotland Yard said a post-mortem examination will take place "in due course".
