From supermodels at Fashion Week toTube commuters and students at Brunel University Londoners have embraced the “Harlem Shake” dance craze.

More than 4,000 videos a day featuring the words “Harlem Shake” are being uploaded on to YouTube and for the first time the US Billboard chart has counted hits on the site, a move which last night propelled the tune by 23-year-old Canadian DJ Baauer to number one.

Videos featuring the dance —including one by models Cara Delevingne and Jourdan Dunn backstage at London Fashion Week — have been viewed 175 million times since the first one was posted on February 2.

DJ Baauer released the hip hop instrumental last year, but it went viral after Australian students posted a video of themselves in which a man dances energetically to the song while his friends all ignore him for 15 seconds before they all begin dancing manically.

Since then, tourists at Oxford Circus, Crystal Palace football club’s cheerleading team and the London Wasps rugby squad have posted their versions of the dance, filmed across the capital.

However, one prominent Londoner has yet to embrace the dance. Speaking at a celebration of London’s heritage at the British Museum last night — in collaboration with the Standard — Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: “I have not heard of the Harlem Shake but I will look it up.”
