A man has died after going for a swim in a Surrey lake on the hottest day of the year so far.
Police said the body of a man was recovered from the lake in Nutfield, Redhill, on Monday night after the first heatwave of the summer saw temperatures soar to 30C in the south-east.
Officers from Surrey Police and paramedics were called to the scene in Nutfield Marsh Road on Monday at about 9.20pm.
The emergency services attended after receiving reports of a “man struggling in the water”.
Police warned of the dangers of swimming in open water during the hot weather and said several youths had been seen swimming in the lake and behaving in an “anti-social manner” on Monday.
In a statement, Surrey Police said: “The death is currently being treated as unexplained, although at this stage there is not believed to be any third party involvement and it is not believed to be suspicious.
“We are currently trying to locate the man’s next of kin.
“We had received several calls earlier in the day reporting that youths were swimming in the lake and behaving in an anti-social manner.
“With the warm weather, we are reminding people of the dangers of swimming in open water.”
A heatwave that has hit London and other parts of the UK is set to continue for the rest of this week with London seeing soaring temperatures of 30C.
Surrey Police have advised that if people want to swim in order to keep cool, they should avoid swimming near weirs, locks, pipes and sluices.
