A pedestrian has died after being hit by a lorry close to the Gherkin.

The victim, who is in his 20s, was hit by a truck on Camomile Street at about 10.50am this morning.

Police remained at the scene for several hours and a cordon was put in place until about 4pm.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area while the incident was being investigated.

A City Police spokeswoman confirmed the man had died after being taken to hospital by ambulance, adding: "We are on the scene and road closures are in place".

The lorry driver has not been arrested, she said.

Witness Francisco Knower, an IT worker whose office overlooks the scene, said: "The police had come and they were trying to pull him out from under the front wheel - from the passenger side.

"They had set up some sort of barrier to stop people from walking by and cordoned off the road.

"I have never seen anything like this before. It is not common - it is quite a busy road with a lot of pedestrians walking about so I guess it might be possible that there will be accidents."

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 10.53am to reports of a road traffic collision on Camomile Street.

"We sent two ambulance crews, a duty officer to the scene. A medical team from London's Air Ambulance in a car also attended.

Images from the scene showed a Travis Perkins lorry halted at the scene behind a police cordon.

In a statement the company said: "Travis Perkins is cooperating with the police following this morning's tragic accident. Our thoughts and very sincere condolences are with the family of the deceased at this very difficult time."
