An abandoned east London police station has been turned into a shop selling out-of-date food.

Leytonstone police station in Kirkdale Road - which was abruptly closed by the Met in October - will house the pop-up shop until the end of June.

The store opened on Thursday selling food which has been discarded by major supermarkets because it is past the "best before" date.

Manager Voytek Stando, 48, said: "People just don't think, they just throw food away because of a date on the label without even checking if it's okay, when there are some places even in this country where people are starving.

"We want to start a new fashion about not wasting food that's edible; we want to influence people's opinions."

Mr Stando founded not-for-profit organisation the Best Before Project, which is working with the Forest Recycling Project to run the shop.

Customers are invited to pay only what they can afford or think the food is worth.

The shop stocks food and drinks which are sealed and non-perishable.

Mr Stando added: "It's not that we especially wanted a police station, but it's a good location close to a Tube station.

"I don't know what was the story with the police vacating it, but we're here until the end of June."

The shop is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10am to 6pm.
