A rogue stag which went on the loose in south London for 10 days has finally been caught and relocated to a private estate.

The animal, apparently nicknamed by Jeremy Corbyn by locals because he is red, was cornered by Croydon Council's parks team yesterday.

He was tranquillised and moved to a private estate in the home counties, a council spokeswoman said today, but the precise location of his new home will be kept top secret to protect him and his owners.

It is still not known where the deer, which spent just over a week locked in Croydon's Park Hill recreation ground, originally escaped from.

Park Hill was closed to the public while the stag was roaming free but it has since been re-opened.

Councillor Timothy Godfrey, cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport, said: “While we’re always welcoming of visitors to Croydon, the unannounced arrival of our antlered guest in Park Hill was not without its challenges.

“Our parks officers, however, rose to those challenges, ensuring that the stag was properly cared for during his week’s stay, and that safe and suitable alternative accommodation was found, to which he’s been moved and, we’re told, settling in nicely.

“I’d like to thank everybody for their patience while the park was closed, but I’m sure they understood why that had to be and, like me, are glad of the happy outcome.”
