This is the dramatic moment a dog was rescued after falling through the gap between a train and the platform at a busy station in south London.

Sammy the King Charles Spaniel had a lucky escape after plummeting onto the tracks at Elephant and Castle this evening.

Video footage shows passengers and TfL staff rescuing the animal who is believed to have fallen about three feet onto the tracks below.

Photographer Duncan Raban who shot the footage described hearing a piercing scream coming from the dog's owner after he slipped between the gap at about 7pm.

He told the Standard: "I was literally just waiting on the platform and suddenly heard a piercing scream.

"I thought a child had slipped through the platform because it was so loud.

"There was a girl with her head under the train, her dog had just dropped through the gap."

A crowd of people worked for around two minutes to save Sammy, while his owner comforted him.

In the video, the pooch is then seen being pulled from underneath the train and into his owner's arms.

Mr Raban added: "It was down about three to four feet but the British Railway staff were there in seconds and they managed to pull him out."

The owner then got onto the train with the rescued dog, which appeared to be completely oblivious to the danger it was in.

Concerned passengers rushed to pet the dog as the woman boarded the train.

After getting the dog back into her arms, she joked: “he took that well.”

The relieved owner told Mr Raban that Sammy had slipped off the train as he tried to board.

Mr Raban added: "I was just trying to capture a moment of joy but the first 10 seconds were frightening."
