Two thirds of Londoners are worried about the dangers posed to cyclists by motorists, according to a new survey.

The survey of 2,000 people also found more than a quarter had concerns about the behaviour of other cyclists.

YouGov, who conducted the poll, found that 66 per cent of people are concerned about the risks posed to cyclists by the way people drive while 28 per cent were concerned by the behaviour of other cyclists.

Nearly one in ten said the demands on public transport as a result of the Olympics would encourage them to get on their bikes.

The results were revealed today as Samsung Bike Week was launched in a bid to encourage more people to cycle.

The week-long promotion was launched this morning with an All-Parliamentary Cycling Group bike ride from the London Transport Museum to the House of Lords.

Those expected to take part included 92-year-old Tommy Godwin, Olympic cycling medallist from the 1948 London games, along with MPs Norman Baker, Under Secretary of State for Transport, Dr Sarah Wollaston and Chloe Smith – who recently launched her own cycling safety campaign.

Philip Darnton, from Samsung Bike Week, said: “This is a unique cycling event because it is as much for total novices as passionate cyclists. We are hoping to capitalise on the additional fundraising incentive, as well as promoting other motivators to get on a bicycle this summer, which are the sunshine (33 per cent), to save money (23 per cent) and get fit (41 per cent).”

Laura Trott, double World Track Cycling Champion and Samsung ambassador, said: “I’ve been training hard ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games, but everyone can get involved in cycling regardless of ability and Samsung Hope Relay brings with it the opportunity to raise money for some incredible charities.”
