War memorial tax bill paid

10 April 2012

A £6  million memorial to RAF Bomber Command has been awarded a £796,000 government grant - to cover its tax bill.

The project honouring its 55,573 members who died in the Second World War is due to be unveiled in Green Park this June.

Heritage minister John Penrose said: "Bomber Command's heroism helped to win the war.

"The Government will settle the tax bill the campaigners have to pay, so that the public's donations will all go to fund the memorial rather than to the taxman."
