As much as one month’s worth of rain is expected to fall in the next 24 hours after downpours ruined much of the bank holiday weekend.

Ten flood alerts were in place last night, with the south east expected to suffer the worst of the weather, according to the Environment Agency.

More than 33mm of rain is likely to fall in some parts of the country tomorrow, though London will only experience slight showers.

Helen Chivers at the Met Office said while rain was expected today and tomorrow, Londoners will have already suffered the worst of the bank holiday washout.

“In comparison to other places London won’t be that bad, we expect around 5mm to fall by tomorrow.

“Towards the latter part of the week though the rain will start to wear off, with temperatures expected to return to the high teens and early 20s over the weekend.

“We won’t be looking at the 26C that was recorded last week for some time though.”

The average temperature for May is between 8C and 18C.

Claire Austin, a forecaster at Meteogroup, said: “We’ve got low pressure coming in from the south, which is causing the wetter weather.

“It’s going to stay changeable through much of the week.”
